When was Skins set out to be a comedy anywase?
I'ts only marginly more series with the complete loss of all the comedicvalue, and as for depth are you sure you are watching the same program we are, it's more prolonging the storyline than adding depth to it currently.
And skins was always setout to be a comedy, from day 1 it's Genre has been "Comedic teen drama" kind of implies that it's going to be amusing aswell as being a drama which series 1 and 2 did great, series 3 has just been a let down so far.

I agree with you here, in series 3 it's quite impossible to like all of them.
And i also prefer series 1 & 2, though 3d has its moments. I enjoyed Thomas', Freddie's & JJ's eps, but on the other hand even these eps can't be compared to the previous series. BTW i don't mind changing the cast, though i miss the old one. I mean, the new faces are fine, but the new storyline is weak in general. What annoys me is that they meant to put a whole school year into 10 eps, it's like showing us 10% of what happens. Plus shown parts hadly connect with each other.
Still, i'll be waiting for series 4 coz even such show is watchable and sometimes enjoyable.

First two or three episodes of season three, I really didn't like the show. I really only liked JJ because he's a lot like me, I say words that most kids don't understand.. so.. Cook was always seen to me as a lame Chris. Freddie was a bit boring and too, well, typical angsty teenager-y. Emily and Naomi, I liked them, but hated Katie and Effy. Pandora was just wwaaaayy to bastardized. If there was a kid like that, I doubt a girl like Effy would hang around with her.. but.. maybe i'm wrong.
Season 1/2 were great. It was on at like 10.30 here on Monday's on SBS. I'd have school the next day and I needed sleep, so i'd tape it on iQ. I remember getting home, watching it and then going off to football (yes.. 'soccer') training. Or sometimes other way round. It was great. I really liked the show, and I still do. Of course everyone loves Chris, because of his personality, but Michelle and Sid were defintly my favourites, when they had that shag when camping, it was like 'woah! favourite characters! the circumstances... wow. cool'.
But - I.. do like season 3 more. Maybe because I've the way I have to watch them, but I just love JJ. Emily and Naomi are decent too. I just hope it has a really good ending scene like season 2.

Yeah, I agree. The first cast was so much more realistic, I mean, I'm not exxagerating when I say that they are pretty much exactly like me and my friends. But the second cast isn't so realistic. I do still love Skins though.
Do you see Freddie?
No.
That's because he's not here. And why didn't we invite him?
Because he's a fun sponge.

In the first series, all of the characters were already a group of friends. Introductory stories weren't necessary. This new series can't pull that off. Here you have separate groups of friends attending college and meeting each other for the first time, mostly. So the writers had to spend some time not only getting the viewers introduced to the new characters, but the characters had to as well. There was no past relationships, they had to dedicate screen time to it.
With that, they've had less room for more complex story lines. For example, the end of the first season had to answer the following questions:
-Will Anwar and Maxxie reconcile?
-Will Tony and Michelle get back together?
-Will Sid and Cassie find each other?
-What happens with Chris and Angie?
-Was Effy going to be okay? [She wasn't fully recovered after episode 8]
All of that was a great build up to a really awesome episode. So far, this final series only has the following question to answer:
-What will become of the Effy / Freddie / Cook situation?
*Spoilers for those who aren't caught up*******
Practically everything else is answered. Emily and Naomi have come out. JJ is no longer as unstable, thanks to Emily. Pandora and Thomas are back together. Katie has finally accepted that her sister is different.
***************
So really, that's all this series is leading up to, which probably makes it feel 'lesser'. I think we should wait until this series finishes both seasons before a judgment is made on quality. I do believe the next season will be better, as the characters will all finally have a backstory and feel closer than they started in 3.

There definitely is a noticeable lack of wit and humor in this series. As for storylines...I don't really know if I'd say it has more depth. If anything, this series has been a lot more plot-driven than character-driven which is unfortunate since focused character development used to be a unique trait of Skins. Storylines move way too fast and we're expected to believe in relationships and friendships that we aren't provided much background for. Why do Effy and Freddie "love" each other? How did Emily so quickly accept her sexual orientation when just a few episodes ago, she adamantly denied that she was a lesbian? How did Cook, Freddie, and JJ remain friends for so long when they have so many damn issues? None of these questions have been answered yet we're expected to accept storylines based on these answers.
I also think the fact that these characters did not start off as a group of friends as with the old cast has made group scenes more forced and awkward to watch. It still doesn't seem realistic to me that they all hang out when so many personalities are at odds with each other. Even as we're nearing the end of the series (and supposedly an entire year of school--when did that happen?!), I haven't really seen many genuine friendships, except maybe Emily and JJ.

Really? I thought it was one of the best. There was plenty of humor in it (Cook's tattoo, Emily and her brother, JJ's remarks). While it was pretty clear Freddie wasn't going to end up with Effy there and then, I don't think anyone would have that she'd fuck Cook right there in the school on the same day. It was the humor and that wild antic that drew me in.

I agree they can be hit or miss. Pandora and JJ had great episodes. I didn't care much for Effy's but I believe the last one was brilliant.
I definitely agree with most of your points about how it's moving quite fast and not answering questions. But I'd like to point out:

I don't believe she was adamant about it. We were kinda lead to believe it was Naomi that was a lesbian, and got the minor twist when it was revealed Emily had kissed her. That pretty much said Emily has always been that way, and so much exposure to Naomi made her admit it. It wasn't like she was straight one episode and then lesbian the next.

I think they've always had issues, but none of them have ever involved a girl getting between them. JJ and Freddie even had a system for rating the scale of how much trouble Cook has caused. Meaning they're at least familiar with his reckless behavior. They're all about 16/17, so they've most likely never had a 'real relationship'. It's one thing to have a friend that's rowdy and a troublemaker. But when you find out he's screwing the girl you love and admitted to nailing your sister, the issues are suddenly 100x worse.
If Season 3 ends in song like Season 1, I probably won't complain. But I'm gonna wager that they'll bring back a Season 1 cast member for the last episode to sort things out. But of course, there's no way it won't end in a cliff hanger.

I truly agree with you. I liked those people in series one and two, but I have to admit that series 3 has more complicated storyline, what is more similar to lives of teenagers in my country. I love the storyline and I love those characters, but I also love series one and two.

I wasn't going to watch S3 initially but I've always loved it from day one too and it would be ignorant to just not watch it because it's not the same. For the first 2 episodes I absolutely HATED it. Didn't see the point at all, it wasn't Skins and was just pointless destruction but it has gotten a lot better and I love it now but I do wish they would just do little things to explain growth in relationships and how long the time period is over.
Sorry for the double post but I have no option to edit the above^
I meant I've been a fan of Skins since series one, day one, "it" was a very broad statement.

You can kinda argue that for S1, though - in regards to Sid and Cassie. They had barely known each other at all. The next episode, it's apparent that Cassie really likes Sid. At only 5 episodes in, she nearly killed herself over him. I'd argue that's a bit more unrealistic compared to S3's stories.
But to be fair, at least Sid and Cassie seemed to have spent a little bit more 'alone time' with each other. It seems like Freddie and Effy only ever made small talk and prolonged stares.

I think that Effy and Freddie storyline is trying to explain the crush that teenagers have for each other at the moment. Many teenagers are like Effy, who just lock down and try to look like arrogant, selfesteemed and strong but they really are same as everyone else.
And I'm sure that half of teenagers in this forum have experienced crush like Effy and Freddie have.
